Auckland Street Photography – Introduction to Street Photography

This one-day workshop, led by Lesley Whyte, we explore street photography with an overview of the different sub-genres.   This introductory street photography workshop is suitable for those who are wanting to explore, learn the art of street photography and to become comfortable at capturing images of people in public.  With travel coming back into full swing, after completing this workshop you will come away with understanding how not to capture “touristy” images and return home with inspirational street images.

Location of activity

Meeting point is at Commercial Bay, 7 Queen Street, Auckland around the escalator & stairs area

What is covered

  • What is street photography – understanding the sub-genres?
  • Laws/rules/ethics– we will discuss some of the legal and moral considerations that you will need to make when working as a street photographer
  • Are special techniques required for street photography?
  • What makes it street photography, and which subjects lend themselves best for it?

Equipment needed

  • Camera with a wide angle lens – something like 28mm or 50mm
  • Batteries to last all day
  • SD card
  • Lens cleaning cloth


  • Photography workshop as outlined above starting at 10.00am and concluding at 3.00pm


  • Lunch, tea or coffee
  • Accommodation
  • Transport to and from the meeting point, although the Britomart train station is 2 minutes walk.
